HISTORY
Watchet AFC was formed in 1887 – now known as Watchet Town Football Club.
Before the War Memorial Ground was established in 1926 the footballers played on the St Decumans ground at Five Bells. Watchet Royal Blues also made use of the ground adjancet to and above Helwell Bay which was known as the Recreation Ground to play their matches in the 1920s and 30s before amalgamating with Watchet AFC.
After being led into the 1970’s by Tom Wilson then Bob Williams, in the 1975-76 season Watchet won promotion back to the Premier Division of the Somerset Senior League as Champions of Division 1 under new player/manager Mike Clausen, who was a driving force behind the construction of the clubhouse.
The Clubhouse was opened in 1978 playing a central role in community life. Used by players and spectators before and after matches, it also runs its own Summer Skittle League and numerous teams use it as home base in the Watchet and District Skittle and Darts Leagues. Numerous team photographs adorn the walls of teams from the 1920s and 30s which are a constant source of interest and inspiration to the players of today.
In the 80’s Watchet had prestigious Somerset Premier Cup-ties with higher grade opposition and played Bristol City at Ashton Gate and Bath City at Twerton Park as well as losing 1-0 at home to Southern League neighbours Minehead. There were management spells from Dave Knight with Adrian Giblett and Nick Sully in the 1980’s before the side went down to Division 2 until they were promoted in 1991-1992 as runners-up with Jimmy Martin and Bob Arthington at the helm. Mike Clausen took over again for a brief period before sadly passing away prematurely on the training ground in 1994 with Bob Arthington back in charge before Sully took over again in the mid/late 1990’s.
In 2010-2011 led by Lawrence Monaghan and with Kevin Holness in the management team, Watchet won the Senior Cup again after a memorable quarter final in Guernsey as well as finishing runners-up in the league. The Cup was won at Street, again after extra time, when Nailsea United were beaten 2-1 thanks to goals from John Harris and Paul Raymond. In 2013-2014 Watchet were beaten finalists in the League Knockout Cup under Andrew Woodward and the next season they were runners-up again, this time in the Senior Cup with Sully again in the hot seat.
In the 20teens the Red & Blacks established themselves as a top 4 Premier Division team and in 2016-2017 they achieved the ultimate prize when they were crowned County League Champions for the first time in the Club’s history, with 9 of their squad making over 30 appearances. Ironically the side recorded a higher points tally the following season, but only finished in second place. Callum Knight then took over and had the unenviable task of guiding the side through the difficult covid years before stepping down prior to Avril Cooke being appointed manager 22-23 season, the team finished in 15th and were relegated to Division one after 15 years in the Premier Division. 2023-24 saw Nick Sully take the helm again with assistance from Mathew Heywood & Aaron Deeks with the team going on a 15 match unbeaten run from mid December to mid April and took Runners-Up spot securing Promotion back to the Premier Division in 2024-2025.
Over the years the club has had many male teams, Watchet Royal Blues, Watchet AFC, Watchet Rovers, Watchet Colts, Watchet Casuals and Sunday teams with the most recent being Watchet Town Blue Waves. The 1970s saw the first Watchet Town Football Club Ladies team – The Watchet Wombles.
The Adult teams today are known as Watchet Town First Team & Watchet Town Reserves and the Club also have a healthy youth section with both youth (11yrs +) and mini youth teams (7-10yrs).
